Though many people think of the dandelion as a weed, there are plenty who extol the medicinal and digestive benefits of the yellow flower.

And KK’s The Farm in Southold will once again celebrate it during the second annual Dandelion Festival on Sunday, April 23 (rain date, April 30).

“The event will be both educational and fun,” said event organizer and farm owner Ira Haspel. “We are trying to increase awareness about dandelions and reduce harmful chemicals that affect our soil. Come taste, enjoy and learn.”

The antioxidant and vitamin rich dandelion, used in teas and even to make wine, has been consumed by humans for thousands of years. Some studies have even shown the plant can help fight cancer.

The event, which drew about 400 people in its first year, will feature educational speakers, wreath making, face painting, food made with dandelion for purchase, hooping, drumming and more.

Also in attendance will be representatives from the North Fork Audubon Society, Group for the East End, school gardens, restaurants and farmers.

The festival runs from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. on April 23 and is free to attend.

KK’s The Farm is located at 59945 Main Road in Southold. For more information call (631) 765-2075 or visit kkthefarm.com.
