At first, several people thought it was a crazy idea.

After all, who in their right mind sponsors an outdoor winter festival, complete with fireworks, in a famous summertime resort?

Sag Harbor, that’s who — and ever since the first successful HarborFrost back in February 2011, this village by the bay has made it an annual tradition.

HarborFrost returns to Sag Harbor in all its glory on Saturday, February 25, 2017 with activities for families, children and adults. Sponsored by the Sag Harbor Chamber of Commerce and billed as a celebration of winter highlighting two extreme elements—fire and ice — visitors will an opportunity to see both during the course of the day.

Shops and restaurants will be open all day and events include indoor children’s activities at Dodds and Eder, assorted ice sculptures along Main Street, ice carving demonstrations, live music at various businesses, a frosty plunge into the icy waters near Windmill Beach (even Matt Lauer has “plunged” some years), fire dancers and, of course, the spectacular Grucci fireworks show on Long Wharf as the winter sun sets.

So keep an eye on the forecast, put on your bathing suit and a parka, and come out to celebrate the glories of the winter season in Sag Harbor.

Here’s the schedule of organized events:

2 p.m. — Frosty Plunge to benefit the Sag Harbor Ambulance Corps. Preregistration for all participants takes place in the Windmill on Long Wharf starting at 1 p.m.

2 p.m. — Live ice carving demonstration on Long Wharf.

3 p.m. and 4 p.m. — Keith Leif, the Amazing Fire Juggler performs on Long Wharf by the Windmill.

5:45 p.m. — Fire Dancers on Long Wharf

6:15 p.m. — Fireworks by Grucci over the Harbor
