The Pitted Olive in Jamesport is no more.

The specialty olive oil and vinegar shop opened on Main Road in Jamesport in summer 2014 and closed its doors Dec. 31, 2016. There, owner and Jamesport resident Linda Durgan offered olive oil tastings, olive-themed gifts, drinkable vinegars and even an olive oil refill program.

On Tuesday, a “for rent” sign hung in the store’s window and much of the inventory appeared to be cleared out, although the shelves were still in place.

“I thank everyone for their support and patronage during the last two and a half years,” Durgan said. “But the profit margin wasn’t there.”

Durgan noted that her shop was the only retail storefront on Jamesport’s Main Street other than a few antique shops and nearby VanKemande Paint.

“Unfortunately retail feeds off of retail,” she said. “The foot traffic isn’t there.”

She added that she may offer products online.

We’re sad to see the business go, as it was clearly a labor of love for Durgan, who was operating her first business. She offered some inspiring insights in an interview for Times Review’s 50 Plus magazine.

Olive oil lovers will have to visit the recently opened The Crushed Olive in Wading River or Vines and Branches in Greenport.
