In what has become a Long Island Wine Country holiday tradition, ice carver Rich Daly will return to Jamesport’s Sherwood House Vineyards Saturday to create another frozen masterpiece.

Daly, who has been an ice carver for 15 years, is also a culinary arts teacher at William Floyd High School in Mastic Beach. He learned the skill while studying at Johnson & Wales University and now runs his business, Ice Melodies, Inc.,which creates handcrafted ice sculpture for all occasions.

“It’s a nice way to get out of the freezer and interact with the community, so they see what we do,” he told us last year.

Sherwood House Vineyards’ 4th Annual Ice Carving presentation will begin at 12:15 p.m. on Saturday, December 17. There is no entrance fee, but wine, soup and light bites will be available for sale.

“Rich will be here and Santa will also make an appearance,” said Kristen Hand, Sherwood House Vineyard’s General Manager. “It’s going to be a nice little Christmas extravaganza.”

Daly has won nearly 100 ice carving events across the country and received more than 40 medals from National Ice Carving Association recognized events.

In 2013 Daly earned the distinction of “Fastest Time to Carve 60 Ice Sculptures” from the Guinness Book of World Records. In 2015 he won two more awards, becoming the grand national champion in the masters division at the U.S. National Ice Carving Association championship and becoming the organization’s tour of champions winner.

Daly has also earned a spot on the 2018 Olympic team as ice sculpting has been a cultural Olympiad event since 1987. There is a cultural arts festival that takes place alongside the international Olympics competition, in which ice sculptors compete. So Daly is headed to South Korea in 2018.

Sherwood House Vineyards is located at 1291 Main Road in Jamesport. For more information call (631) 779-2817.
