Beauty Apothecary Mattituck

For a region that cares so deeply about where its food comes from, organic skincare and cosmetics seem like the natural progression.

Say hello to The Beauty Apothecary, a new skincare and cosmetics store in Mattituck.

Carrying a variety of organic and natural products from around the world, The Beauty Apothecary appears to be a good fit for the Love Lane shopping scene.

For owner Pamela Davis of Mattituck, healthy skincare products became a necessity and a passion after she was diagnosed with breast cancer last year.

“I learned that synthetic fragrance is the number one hormone destructor and I used perfume all the time,” Davis said. “Then when I realized synthetic fragrance was in everything, including the skincare I was using, the soap in my shower, I told my family — while I was going through chemo — that I was opening a shop.”

Located inside Mattituck Florist on Love Lane, Davis’ space is intimate which is what she prefers.

“I wanted to start small, because it’s a really nice way to just sell the things that I love and share it with people,” she said.

Every product is either organic or made with natural products. Davis has carefully curated the items she sells, making sure all are eco-friendly and are not tested on animals.

“This is really the only shop, on the North Fork [or] South Fork where everything across the board isn’t tested on animals, is as natural as can be, has no synthetic fragrances and no extra chemicals,” she said. “The nail polish is the only thing in here that has chemicals, but it’s free of the really harmful things like formaldehyde and benzene.”

Being organic and natural doesn’t mean you have to skimp on quality either, she said. Some of the product lines Beauty Apothecary carries include high-end manufacturers like RMS, Farmstead Apothecary, One Love Organics, and Vapour.

“It’s still real top of the line, luxurious brands,” said Davis, who holds a bachelor of science in plant science. “There’s no sacrifice in the way it feels on your skin or how it smells out of the bottle.”

Since The Beauty Apothecary moved into Mattituck Florist, it has been a match made in heaven for both businesses, said Mattituck Florist owner Danielle LaScala.

“I was looking to rent that space and thought it would be a great fit for the two of us, considering a lot of her stuff is natural, organic or plant-based,” LaScala said. “She’s a wonderful person, so it’s working out well.”

The customers agree.

“It’s my first time here,” said Rebekah Smith, a customer from Mattituck. “I’m checking out highlighters by Rosemary Swift (RMS), which I haven’t tried before, but I’m liking it.”

When asked about the pharmaceutical-sounding name of her shop, Davis, who is now cancer-free, is quick to agree.

“People went to apothecaries for their medicine,” Davis said. “They were mixing herbs and other things to heal you. I want to go back to the idea of using herbs and things that nourish and help, rather than potentially harm.”

The Beauty Apothecary is open Thursday through Monday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is located inside Mattituck Florist at 95 Love Lane in Mattituck. For more information call (516) 380-0404 or visit lovelanebeautyapothecary.com.
