In December, nearly every other car you pass on Main Road will have a tree strapped to its roof.

That’s because the North Fork is a major destination for fresh cut trees, handmade wreaths and farm fresh goods. So, load up the car and plan on spending a day out east this season.

Here are six North Fork tree buying experiences.

If you want …

… your pet to meet Santa

Visit Chick’s Agway in Southold or Talmage Agway in Riverhead.

Bring your pets in for a free photo op with Santa at Chick’s (1705 Young’s Ave., Southold, NY) on Saturday, Dec. 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Santa will have a goodie bag for each pet who visits.

The following week, on Saturday, December 10, you can head to Talmage (1122 Osborn Ave., Riverhead, NY) for a free digital pic with the Big Man in Red. Talmage will email you a copy. The event runs from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

All pets (even guinea pigs and water fowl) are welcome.

… To cut your own tree

Does it make sense to drive to a rural area, cut down a seven-foot tree and put it in your living room for several weeks? No, it does not. But that doesn’t put a damper on this fun holiday tradition.

Visit the following North Fork spots to cut your own:

…  jarred farm goods like pickled beets and horseradish

Then visit Schmitt’s Farmstand on Sound (3355 Sound Avenue, Riverhead).

In addition to their jams horseradish (for which Schmitt’s is known), they also offer pre-cut trees and wreaths.

… to take a ferry

Ahhh, the sweet smell of salt air on a crisp winter’s day.

Visit Gulluscio Storage on Shelter Island (20 Manwaring Road) and take in a little Island sight-seeing during your trip. They offer pre-cut trees and wreaths.

Stop in to Marie Eiffel Market or Stars Café while you’re there.

… to meet Santa and his reindeer

Then visit his eponymous store, Santa’s Christmas Tree Farm (30105 Main Road, Cutchogue). Santa stops by every weekend through December.

The 30 acre farm also features free hayrides, live reindeer and a store offering personalized ornaments and other decor.

… to visit an upscale garden center

Shade Trees Nursery (1875 Main Road, Jamesport) offers chic decor, ornaments, grave blankets, wreaths, honey and wine from Channing Daughters Winery and Wölffer Estate Vineyard,

The complimentary hot chocolate and donuts are a MAJOR bonus. Enjoy them while snuggled up by the fire pit.

While you’re there pick up some North Breeze Farms goods, which are specialty products made from the farm’s ingredients.
