Where are the coolest towns on Long Island? Hint: They are not in Nassau County.

Mattituck and Greenport both made a recent Travelzoo list of “12 Cool Towns That Make Long Island a Year-Round Star.” Local business like The Village Cheese Shop, Shinn Estate Vineyards and Claudio’s were also highlighted in the travel deal website’s article.

“Due to its proximity to farmland and sea, the North Fork food scene is getting rave reviews as a food destination,” wrote author Annemarie Kropf. “On the drive, you may be tempted to stop at farm stands selling everything from potatoes and fresh eggs to fruits and ducks,” the article states.

Shelter Island also got a shoutout in the roundup, along withPort Jefferson, Stony Brook, Fire Island, Huntington, Patchogue and Sayville and several South Fork hamlets and villages. Only towns in Suffolk County made the list.

TravelZoo acknowledges that most people know Long Island as a summertime destination. But the truth is there is plenty to enjoy throughout our quaint towns even in the off-season.

“As you go, expect to see forests and farmland, scenes out of a New England postcard, hip downtown spots and bohemian beach towns,” the article states. “It’s kind of like all the best parts of America on one island.”
