The North Fork just saw it first frost and we’ll likely be seeing the white stuff in the coming weeks, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still get fresh, organic and locally grown produce.

Though many farm stands shut down toward the end of November, several organic North Fork farms offer winter community supported agriculture (CSA) programs with items like root vegetables, potatoes, kale, swiss chard and brussels sprouts.

“We try to keep it diverse, there’s definitely a lot of root vegetables like sweet potatoes, rutabaga and beets,” Eve Kaplan-Walbrescht, owner of Garden of Eve Organic Farm and Market, said. “Then there’s a lot of greens in April and May, like mesclun, baby kale and bok choi, and those are some of the best-tasting greens of the year.”

Along with vegetables, many of these farms also offer add-on shares of hormone-free meat, fresh eggs, cheese and bread.

Here are four local organic farms offering a winter CSA program.

Garden of Eve Organic Farm and Market
4558 Sound Ave., Riverhead
(631) 722-8777

Garden of Eve offers a pre-boxed, once a month pickup from December through May.

The “Garden of Eve” winter share includes produce and eggs from the farm. A vegan option replaces the eggs with locally grown apples.

The “Shopping Basket” share features smaller quantities of eggs and produce, with the addition of two to three local products, including pickles, jarred tomatoes, organic flours and dried beans.

Both winter share and shopping basket share are $330 for six months, or $55 per pickup.

Pickup locations include the Riverhead farm and various western Long Island and New York City neighborhoods.

Garden of Eve also offers egg, fruit, cheese and dairy, bread and soup, as well as pickles and preserve shares. Visit gardenofevefarm.com for more information and to sign up.

Golden Earthworm Organic Farm
652 Peconic Bay Boulevard, Jamesport
(631) 722-3302

Golden Earthworm is now accepting applications for its winter share, which runs from December through March.

There are two pickup locations, one at the Jamesport farm (Thursdays) and another in Port Washington (Tuesdays). There will be four pickup dates and each box will contain 10 plus pounds of produce like potatoes, rutabaga, carrots, leeks, winter squash. (Exact contents to be decided).

There will be four deliveries at $20 value per box ($80 total.)

Pickup dates are Dec. 15, Jan. 12, Feb. 9 and Mar. 9 for the Jamesport location.

Dec. 13, Jan. 10, Feb. 7 and Mar. 7 for the Port Washington location.

KK’s The Farm
59945 Main Road, Southold
(516) 398-8731

Unlike other CSA programs where you must pay in advance, KK’s The Farm does things a little differently.

Here you can place weekly orders, depending on what’s available at the organic and biodynamic farm, and pay as you go. There is no minimum purchase and no weekly obligation.

Farmer Ira Haspel sends out a weekly email detailing what’s in stock and you just email him back with your order. To join the list, email [email protected].

Some examples of available items are Swiss chard, arugula, mustard greens, freshly made pestos and herbs.
