Join the cavalry to help save dogs in the U.S. and overseas at the first-ever “Barktober Bash” this Saturday, Oct. 15, in Riverhead.

Coordinated by the Long Island-based animal welfare organization Global Canine Cavalry, the event will take place from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and include food, music and entertainment.

Dinner will be catered by Justin’s Chop Shop of Westhampton Beach, with wine provided by Mattebella Vineyards of Southold.

Entertainment will be performed by three standup comedians and there will be a live auction, with all funds going to help save dogs under the care of GCC.

Global Canine Cavalry is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that works closely with local animal welfare groups such as Bideawee, Kent Animal Shelter and RSVP Animal Welfare & Rescue Group.

Described as a halfway house for pets, Global Canine Cavalry helps dog owners by alleviating the financial burden of animal medical care as well as fostering dogs for pet owners struggling with housing and health-care issues.

“We’re the last stop before they have to bring their dog to a shelter,” GCC board member Tara Borsman-Gneist said.

GCC also works overseas, rescuing animals from the dog meat trade in Indonesia and offering dog training programs to indigenous tribes in South Africa. Having just received its tax-exempt status this year, the 18-year old organization is thanking supporters with Saturday’s event.

“We felt it was a good time to show what we’ve been doing and give a treat to all the people that have been supporting us,” Borsman-Gneist said. “We wouldn’t be where we are without the support of the community.”

Tickets to Saturday’s inaugural Barktober Dinner Bash are $85 per person. The event will be held inside the barn at Spirit’s Promise Equine Rescue Facility at 2746 Sound Ave., Riverhead. For more information and to purchase tickets visit globalcaninecavalry.org.
