Sweet corn, hot roasted corn and even corn ice cream are being served up at the 27th Annual Sweet Corn Festival at Harbes Family Farm this weekend.

The fourth generation farm has a long history on the North Fork, but the Harbes’ only just started planting corn in the late 1980s, seeing their first harvest in 1989. The sweet corn was a hit from day one and has become a mainstay at the farm ever since, with 60 acres planted every year.

“We really take pride in our corn,” Shannon Harbes said. “Especially in trying to make the best tasting corn and growing it using agriculturally sustainable practices. It’s a big part of the family culture.”

This year’s two-day Sweet Corn Festival will take place on Saturday, July 23 and Sunday, July 24 from noon to 7 p.m. and it includes popular attractions like the annual corn eating contest, in which the winner receives a family 4-pack to Harbes’ Barnyard Adventure.

There will also be pony rides, singing hayrides, live music and wine tastings.

“This binds us to the community in a really nice way,” Harbes said. “We have our local customers that have been waiting for the corn to be ready, so that’s nice to be a part of that and share it with everyone.”

Harbes Family Farm is located at 715 Sound Avenue in Mattituck. For more information call (631) 298-0800 or visit harbesfamilyfarm.com.
