In 2012, married couple Brianne and Thomas Hart started farming on leased land in Orient. One year later, they purchased a farmhouse on an 8-acre lot in Southold.
When Thomas needed to register his farm with the state, he searched online for farm name ideas and came across “Deep Roots.”
After he settled on the name Deep Roots Farm, he later found out it was the same name as a former North Fork farm.
“We want to put down roots in this community,” he said. “I’m not going anywhere and our families are not. We are trying to figure out how to make a living and stay in Southold.”
The farm currently has 22 CSA members and the family started harvesting Thursday with the help of Thomas’ mother, Michelle Hart, and Brianne’s brother, Kiernan Bohonan.
It takes up to four hours to box produce for CSA members, Thomas said. This week, he boxed kale, mixed beets, greens, zucchini, radishes, leaf lettuce, carrots and three varieties of cucumbers, including lemon and silver slicer.
“We want to spoil our CSA members,” Brianne said. “We do a little bit of everything and we don’t look for anything fancy. We farm as clean as we can and as sustainable as we can.”
Kiernan harvested the first garlic heads of the season this week and Michelle harvested basil to sell to a purveyor at the Stony Brook Incubator in Calverton for making pesto.
There are six pasture-raised Tamworth pigs, 250 egg laying chickens and 50 meat chickens, which they process every other week.
Veggies, herbs, flowers, eggs and chicken are available at the farmstand.
