Take mom shopping in Greenport on Saturday, May 7 for the first-ever Mom-a-thon, a pre-Mother’s Day sidewalk sale full of food, fun and deals.
Sponsored by the Greenport Business Improvement District, local merchants and village officials hope to draw visitors in the same tradition as the annual Greenport Maritime Festival and last year’s Tall Ships Festival.
“We’re trying to enliven the business district for the coming season and kicking it off with this Mother’s Day event,” said Caroline Waloski, BID Promotion Liaison and owner of The Sirens’ Song Gallery in Greenport.
Shops along Front and Main streets will be participating. Part of the strategy to attract shoppers will be a raffle basket prize for mom.
“Greenport merchants are donating all kinds of merchandise for the raffle basket,” Waloski said. “We’ve received items from Doof Pot, Calypso St. Barth and Sweet Indulgences.”
Shoppers will register for the raffle when they make a purchase of $10 or more at a participating store. The raffle drawing will take place at 5 p.m., but participants do not have to be in attendance to win. If they can’t make it, they will be contacted via e-mail.
Local shops aren’t the only businesses getting in on the fun as restaurants like First and South will offer up special food deals and Special Effects’ Special Tea Shop will serve a Mother’s Day tea with tea sandwiches, Waloski said.
While streets will not close down, merchants on Front Street and Main Street will set up tables on the sidewalks.
The event will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 7 in Greenport. For more information visit greenportvillage.com.
