After an unusually warm holiday season on the East Coast that saw temperatures climb as high as the 70s, a blast of cold means a North Fork tradition can finally begin: Greenport Village will open its ice skating rink at Mitchell Park on Wednesday, January 6.But while this opening week is finally promising some cool and clear ice skating weather, village officials don’t know if the rink will remain open for the first weekend of the new year.

“We are expecting some rain,” said Village Clerk Sylvia Pirillo, so skaters should call ahead if the weather turns.

The rink will be open to the public on weekdays from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Weekday admission is $5 for adults and $3 for anyone under 18. On weekends and holidays the facility will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Weekend and holiday admission is $10 for adults and $7 for anyone under 18.

Skate rentals are $5 weekends and weekdays. The village rink also offers skate sharpening, training bar rentals as well as public and private lessons.

For skate rentals, customers must leave a deposit in the form of a driver’s license, student ID card, credit card or cash ($10/pair of skates) with no exceptions. Helmets are available and free of charge. Skaters are encouraged to bring their own if possible.

The ice rink is expected to remain open until at least mid to late March 2016, as long as temperatures remain below freezing. The Mitchell Park Ice Skating Rink is located on Front Street in Greenport and is within easy walking distance of many local shops, restaurants and cafes.
