Think your meatball recipe is the bomb? Now you have a chance to put your meatballs where your mouth is, literally!

Deep Water Bar & Grille in Greenport is holding its first ever “Meatball Contest” on Sunday, Dec. 13 at 2 p.m — and it’s all for a good cause.

Owner Beth Pike is still looking for people who want to compete. You don’t have to be a professional chef to enter.

“Some people are from restaurants, but most contestants are customers,” said Pike, who opened the Front Street eatery in May.

Anyone who has a great meatball recipe and wants to compete can enter. All you have to do is make 12 meatballs to be judged in the contest. The meatball chefs will not be identified until the contest is over so that judging will remain objective.

“There are just three criteria for the meatballs,” explained Pike. “Taste, texture and overall [quality].”

Pike says unusual flavors and ingredients are welcome. “It can be chicken, fish, who knows? Maybe the oddest one will win,” she said.

Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place. There will also be music and food and drink specials.

There is a $5 donation fee to enter. There will also be a Chinese Auction and 50/50 raffle. All proceeds will go to the Wounded Warrior Project.

“Every year, instead of giving gifts to the family, I do things personally like make donations,” Pike said. “Last year I did it for re-foresting and this year I’m doing it for the Wounded Warriors.”

If you would like to compete in Deep Water Bar & Grille’s first ever “Meatball Contest” contact Beth Pike at (516) 967-6563. If you are interested in being a judge, the contest begins at 2 p.m.

Deep Water Bar & Grille is located at 47 Front Street in Greenport.
