Tall Ships Greenport

We’re counting down the top coolest stories of 2015 on northforker.com. We will publish one story on our list per day, every day, until Jan. 1.

Coming in at number 3 is the arrival of the Tall Ships.

It was considered a gamble to schedule Greenport’s Tall Ships Challenge during Fourth of July weekend, but the event turned out to be a rip-roaring success.

The weather cooperated, the crowds came and Greenport’s 2015 Tall Ships weekend was declared a unequivocal triumph on all fronts.

Three times as many visitors came in 2015, compared to 2012, according to early ticket sales.

Six Tall Ships from around the world arrived to celebrate and immediately took to the maritime village.

“Greenport is very charming, with all the people coming here today and tomorrow, it will make this a great weekend for Greenport,” said Paolo Alcobia Portugal, captain of the Portuguese ship Sagres.

Visitors came with big expectations, some from as far away as Texas and California, and many walked away very impressed.

“I have to give kudos to the people of Greenport,” said Linda Krauss of Shelter Island. “They’ve done a great job.”

Greenport Village netted nearly $59,000 in profit over four days, according to a village expense report. That’s more then twice what was made in 2012.

“All in all, everything went very well,” said Mayor George Hubbard.

There’s no word yet on whether there will be a Tall Ships 2018. But Greenport can rest on its laurels, knowing that it can put on a great show when it wants to.
