Have you ever wanted to hang around Greenport Village wearing a flipper and a pastel wig? Well here’s your chance.
The Merry Merfolk parade, which will feature a mermaid princess and dozens of her followers, will float down Greenport’s Main Street on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 11 a.m.
Now in its third year, the parade is a part of the Greenport Maritime Festival. The event is open to people of all ages who wish to dress as merfolk. However, registration is required as participants are capped at 60.

“Out on the East End we are surrounded on three sides by water and have a long maritime history,” said Caroline Waloski, owner of The Sirens’ Song Gallery and the event’s organizer. “This event celebrates all that is maritime: creatures, fishing, recreation,aquaculture [and] boat building. It is as much a part of our present as our past.”

This year’s princess is “Mermaid Bethany,” who will ride in a boat hand-painted by East End Arts artist-in-residence Chris Dyer.
The event is sponsored by The Sirens’ Song Gallery and the Greenport BID.
Other contributors include East End Arts, the Long Island Aquarium and Exhibition Center and The Riverhead Community Development Agency. The event benefits the Cornell Cooperative Extension “Back to the Bays” program through donations and the sale of event memorabilia. The program supports the planting of eel grass in local waters.
