Garlic will get the star treatment this weekend as Garden of Eve hosts the 12th annual Garlic Festival this weekend, Saturday, Sept. 19, and Sunday, Sept. 20.

This is Long Island’s only festival dedicated to this pungeant plant. Events scheduled to celebrate the smelly seasoning include a Junior Iron Chef cooking competition, cooking demonstrations, gardening workshops, crafts and more.

Try your hand at Garlic Bingo or, if you’re feeling particularly adventurous and have a strong stomach, enter the garlic-eating contest!

There will also be plenty of garlic-inspired foods and dishes to sample — like garlic bread, garlic fries, garlic hot pepper jelly, garlic butter mashed potatoes and even garlic ice cream. Vendors will be selling garlic soup, garlic chowder, garlic cupcakes and cookies, and empanadas with garlic. There will also be plenty of fresh garlic for sale.

“Garlic is something that really inspires passion in people, they either love it or hate it,” said Garden of Eve owner Eve Kaplan-Walbrecht. “It’s something that people really love to celebrate.”

Live music will be provided by the Long Island Bluegrass Quartet, Free Grass Union, The Red River Ramblers and Buddy Merriam and The Backroads.

Festival hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days, rain or shine. Admission is $5 per person; children under six are free.

Garden of Eve Organic Farm and Market is located at 4558 Sound Avenue in Riverhead, at the intersection of Northville Turnpike (Route 43) and Sound Avenue.
