Grab a blanket and some popcorn and head down to Wading River Beach Saturday.

Residents can watch the animated movie “Surf’s Up” on a 14 foot by 26 foot outdoor screen, a free event that’s the first of its kind at the beach.

The 2007 hit movie from Sony Pictures is a comedy about a penguin surfer, Cody Maverick, who after entering his first professional surfing competition learns that sometimes the winner isn’t the person who comes in first.

The movie will begin at approximately 8 p.m. and any town resident can attend. An adult must accompany children under 18.

“I invite our residents to come spend an evening under the stars watching a family-friendly movie with their children, family and neighbors,” said Riverhead Town Supervisor Sean Walter. “I hope this is the first of many movies to be made available at this location.”

People planning to attend are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets.

For more information about the event, call the Town of Riverhead Recreation department at (631) 727-5744. In case of inclement weather call (631) 727-5744 ext. 30 for updated information.
