Long Island winemakers are balancing Old World grape varietals with New World techniques, a marriage Tasting Table has called the “Middle World” wine movement.

Tasting Table, a food and wine website and newsletter, acknowledged the success and maturation of the Long Island wine industry in a recent article highlighting some of the region’s best producers.

“I’ve dabbled in Long Island wines for about three years and have become quite a fan,” Eric Hastings, beverage director at Jean-Georges Restaurants, told the website. “Their wines are part of what I’m calling the ‘Middle World,’ mixing nuances of both the Old and New Worlds. The Middle World maintains a balance of terroir and fruit, creating classy wines that are terrific alone and with food. I really enjoy Shinn Estate‘s Grace and Clarity blends.”

Other wines mentioned in the article include Macari’s rosé and Sparkling Pointe’s brut seduction.

While this is the first we are hearing of the term “Middle World,” we find it an apt description of what is going on today in the Long Island wine industry.
