Who doesn’t love a little polka and pierogis?
The 41st annual Polish Town Fair and Polka Festival comes to Riverhead’s Polish Town Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 15 and 16, sponsored by the Polish Town Civic Association.
A free street fair will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days, with art, crafts, jewelry, specialty booths featuring Polish imports and authentic Polish food — including kielbasa, homemade pierogi, stuffed cabbage and babka. The official 2015 Polish Town mug, souvenir cookbook and T-shirt will also be available for sale. Music at the show mobile will be provided both days by DJ Hank.
Among Saturday’s highlights are an old-fashioned Polish wedding re-enactment on the steps of St. Isidore R.C. Church, a flag-raising ceremony with a Polish choir, demonstrations of Polish customs, and Miss Polish Town USA 2015, Claudia Zacharewicz. Polonaise Park’s Polka Dance Festival runs from 5 to 11 p.m. and features music by John Gora with Mike Costa and the Beat. Admission is $15 for adults and $8 for children under 12.
Sunday’s events include Polish cooking instruction and demonstrations and other family entertainment, including a magic show beginning at noon at the pavilion. Fair attendees can show off their skills at a kielbasa-eating contest at 3 p.m. or a corn-husking contest at 4 p.m. St. Maximilian Polish School dancers will perform at 3:30 p.m.
