It started out as an unusual concept, but the idea has certainly caught on. A shellfish shack where you can pop open your own oysters after getting a lesson in the art of shucking.

And now Little Creek Oyster Farm & Market in Greenport, which has been written up in every publication from Newsday to Bon Appetite, just got a shout out in the New York Times Front Burner column.

“Actually, that’s the whole point, and part of the fun, at Little Creek Oyster Farm’s no-frills dockside oyster shack in Greenport, N.Y. (Look for the bait-and-tackle sign.)  The owners of the oyster farm, Ian Wile and Rosalie Rung, and their staff provide the necessary knives, gloves, gripping boards and a lesson to those intent on prying open the oysters before slurping them down,” wrote New York Times food columnist Florence Fabricant.

Fabricant is no stranger to the North Fork as she has written about Long Island food for years and was honored last year at Dan’s Harvest East End.
