Rolling Stone magazine was in the house at Martha Clara Vineyards on Tuesday night and published an article highlighting the “street-preacher bravado” displayed by headliner Beck.

“By the end of the song [Debra], Beck was on his knees, center stage, emoting like it was the last time he’d ever belt out the tune,” said Rolling Stone writer Jason Newman. “Beck exuded an exuberance and looseness that made his set feel more like an intimate warm-up show than a festival gig.”

The magazine noted that it was the last time the Grammy Award-winning singer would perform in the U.S. this year and the first time he performed his new single “Dreams.”

The article focused on the artist’s versatility and how he brought an upbeat performance on Tuesday, which was a departure from his most recent album, the more slow-paced “Morning Phrase.”

“Since his debut more than 20 years ago, Beck has always straddled the line between devout student and smarmy prankster, crafting tracks that blend the earnest with the parodic,” the article stated. “On Tuesday, using Rodgers as the obvious inspiration, Beck masterfully showed how to respect your elders with one eye winking.”
