North Fork Waiter Race

Waiters: On your mark, get set, serve!

Servers will show off their dining room skills and fight for prizes and bragging rights when the North Fork Waiter Race returns to the streets of Greenport on Saturday, May 16, at 10 a.m. The fourth annual charitable event will benefit the Eastern Long Island Hospital Foundation.

Shelly Scoggin, owner of The Market in Greenport and the event’s organizer, said she was inspired by similar (and more serious) events in France and other parts of the world.
“It’s been happening in Paris and Europe and all over the world for years and years. I’ve seen it in Washington D.C. when we lived there,” she said. “We thought it would be a fun thing to do here.”

The entry fee is $50 and participants must register at The Market in advance. Each participant is encouraged to raise additional sponsorships, which will go toward additional prize money and funds donated to ELIH.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the first, second and third-place winners.

Participants are required to bring a tray and one stemmed wine glass; they must also wear the uniform of the establishment they represent. The glass on their trays will be filled with half the contents of a bottle provided by a beverage sponsor. Both the wine glass and the bottle must remain on the tray for the entire race. Both the bottle and the glass should be at the same level at the end and the serving tray must be dry.

Remember: No touching the glass or bottle, no running and no spilling during the race.

The race starts at the ELIH Opportunity Shop, travels down Main Street to Claudio’s and then ends at the Opportunity Shop.

Register at The Market, located at 44 Front Street in Greenport.
