The North Fork of Long Island has been touted as the source of some of the world’s best sauvignon blancs, and Wine & Spirits Magazine appears to agree.

The publication named the 2013 sauvignon blanc at Macari Vineyards & Winery in Mattituck the year’s “best of the year” in a blind panel that taste-tested 274 new-release wines of the same varietal.

With a total of 90 points, Macari’s sauvignon blanc was also was one of 17 wines to be rated “exceptional” by the magazine in its June 2015 issue.

“Macari Vineyards is honored to have been selected among that group of 17 and we are extremely proud of the efforts of our team,” winery manager Gabriella Macari wrote in an email. “Wine & Spirits Magazine is among the most highly regarded publications in our industry and its readership spans the globe. The importance of exposure from national features such as this cannot be understated — both for us and for the New York/Long Island wine regions.”

In a review of Macari’s sauvignon blanc, judge Patrick J. Comiskey wrote that “Leesy scents of biscuits and golden apple give way to this wine’s rich mouthful of pineapple flavor. Its plump texture will prop up a pairing with stuffed clams.”

Fermented in stainless steel tanks, the wine also boasts “bright, citrus aromatics with high-toned notes of grapefruit and kefir lime,” according to a description on the Bergen Avenue winery’s website. It won gold and silver medals, respectively, at the 2014 NY Wine & Food Classic and 2015 TEXSOM International Wine Awards.

Macari was also named 2014’s “Winery of the Year” at the NY Wine & Food Classic.
