When Tony’s Asian Fusion first opened its Mattituck location in 2011, it was like shiny yellow fin tuna beckoning to us from a sea of salami deli sandwiches and Starbucks protein bistro boxes.
But proximity to Times/Review’s nearby office isn’t the only reason why it was and remains one of our favorite lunch spots.
The North Fork is sorely lacking in any type of ethnic food, and while we don’t exactly consider Asian fusion exotic cusine in this day and age, it’s nice to have a nearby lunch choice that isn’t deli or pizza.
The service is usually quick here, the sushi always fresh (as sushi always should be) and the service is friendly. And while the decor is sleek and inviting, it’s an ideal spot to call in an order and pick it up (time out of the office? Less than 10 minutes).
On a recent visit we chose the sushi special number one. Five pieces of sushi are served with a tuna roll with miso soup and a garden salad ($9.99.)
However, I almost always get a sweet potato roll and a tuna avocado roll and spent my entire meal wishing I had ordered that instead.
Always go with your gut, folks.
Another favorite is the Hampton Dream Roll (with tempura shrimp, eggs and caviar) and the Philadelphia roll.
Tony’s gets points for offering both sides with their lunch special and the numerous options in the $10 to $12 range, have kept us coming back for years.
With locations in East Quogue, Hamptons Bays, Westhampton Beach and East Moriches (a Greenport location closed), Tony’s is kind of the Asian fusion empire on the East End. In terms of price and quality they are in the middle of the Asian food market, but they fill that niche well.
That being said, it will be interesting to see how a new high-end Japanese restaurant, to be called Stirling Sake, is received when it opens in Greenport later this year. We’ll be watching.
My one complaint about Tony’s, though? My fortune cookie read “disregard previous cookie.” I feel like I’m owed two cookies, now.
