The enticing aroma of food filling the air as I walked into the bustling North Road Deli brought me back. The deli, fittingly located on Route 48 in Southold, was the go-to place for Southold High School students to grab a freshly made sandwich on their lunch break.

Before graduating nearly 10 years ago, I probably ate there three to four times a week — in my defense, their homemade Russian dressing is addictingly delicious. So, when I visited the North Road Deli for ‘What’s for Lunch’ — my first visit since high school — I had high expectations.

And as I’d hoped, it didn’t disappoint.

Determined to stray from my old favorite (and arguably boring) choice of turkey on a roll with mayo, I took some time to review the deli’s extensive menu, which includes everything from homemade pasta salads to hamburgers and desserts.

I settled on the Horton’s Point — a Boar’s Head turkey sandwich with bacon, provolone cheese and, of course, their homemade Russian dressing. My more grown up pallet appreciated the added zing the provolone brought to the dressing and the portion was more than enough to quiet a rumbling stomach mid-day.

Open until 3 p.m., North Road Deli’s convenient location along the wine trail makes it an ideal place to stop and grab lunch to take to the North Fork’s nearby beaches, parks and wineries (and here are some vineyards that allow you to bring your own food).

North Road Deli is located at 46520 Middle Rd, Southold, NY 11971. Call (631) 765-4110 for more information.
