Mattituck could be the latest North Fork hamlet to become home to a brewery.
Eastern Front Microbrewery owner Douglas Pearsall said he and his girlfriend are looking to convert an existing 70 x 31 foot storage building they are leasing on Westphalia Road into a brewery and 312-square foot retail space.
Mr. Pearsall said Monday that after several years of homebrewing at his Mattituck home, the time was right to break into the emerging craft beer industry on the North Fork.
“We decided to take a stab at it,” he said. “We live out here and like the idea of having [a brewery] in the middle of the wine trail. Not everyone drinks wine.”
Eastern Front Microbrewery is Pearsall’s first business. He currently works as a mechanic at a local marina and is using his technical skills to build his own brewing equipment, he said.
For now Pearsall said he is keeping mum on the details of the operation. That is at least until the Southold Town Planning Board approves Eastern Front Microbrewery’s site plan, he said.
A public hearing on the proposed brewery is scheduled for April 6.
