Cool, in more ways than one. A hooded merganser gliding on a Silver Beach pond last week. (Credit: Courtesy of Don Bindler)

Shelter Islander Don Bindler was out hunting — with his camera — last week and bagged this visitor.

In a note to the Shelter Island Reporter, Don wrote, “The encroaching ice on ponds and bays forces local water fowl to look for patches of open water in order to feed. This often makes them easier to see and photograph, such as this beautiful hooded merganser feeding with a small flock in a canal in Silver Beach.”

We’ve never seen anything like this animal before, but he is quite the sight.
