Mussels Luciano and a bowl of Manhattan clam chowder soup from Jerry and the Mermaid. (Credit: Vera Chinese)

Just take the broth of the mussels Luciano at Jerry and the Mermaid, put it in a 32 oz. cup and I’ll take it to go. Thanks.

In this week’s edition of “What’s For Lunch?” we recommend the Local Mussels Luciano Style and a bowl of Manhattan clam chowder from this downtown Riverhead establishment.

The mussels are served in broth of whir wine, garlic, butter and Jerry’s special herb and seasoning blend ($11.95.) Enjoy it with a side of Manhattan clam chowder ($5.50.)

The buttery, garlicky goodness of the mussels broth is the main draw for the dish. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself using the accompanying bread roll to soak up as much juice as possible. The dish is big enough to share, especially with the addition of the soup, but you may not want to.

As for the Manhattan clam chowder, this is a dish we look forward to every year following the Run for the Ridley 5K in downtown Riverhead. The restaurant donates cups of soup to runners, who welcome the warm, tasty chowder after the frequently chilly run. The filling, hearty soup is perfect for this time of the year, especially considering how nasty the weather has been.

Jerry’s makes for a great lunch for anyone visiting Long Island Aquarium nearby, especially during the summer when diners can enjoy a view of the marina. And the friendly and attentive service help make it a regular spot for locals.

Jerry and the Mermaid is located at 469 East Main Street in Riverhead.
