Rich in both history and delicious eats, Newsday‘s ExploreLI has named Riverhead Diner & Grill one of Long Island’s 12 best traditional diners.

Serving up home-cooked meals for nearly a century, the diner offers a plentiful and diverse menu ranging from homemade chicken soup to their always-popular Yankee pot roast.

While many Nassau and Suffolk diners offer almost indistinguishable exteriors and food, the downtown eatery’s heritage and cozy feel helps set it apart.

ExploreLI puts it this way:

“Not many restaurants can boast 80 years of history, but Riverhead Diner has blown past that landmark anniversary. Travel back to the 1930s for breakfast, lunch and dinner at this historic spot,” Newsday food writer Joan Reminick wrote.

Not just great for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Family Circle Magazine previously featured the restaurant’s old-fashioned Lemon Meringue Pie recipe to make for dessert.

Also making the list of ExploreLI’s best local diners is one of our up-Island favorites, The CookRoom. Located just a short drive from the North Fork on 25 Middle Country Road in Middle Island, we recommend taking the trip to check out this down home eatery.

Riverhead Diner & Grill is located at 85 E. Main Street in downtown Riverhead.
