It is hard not to instantly fall in love with the newly opened Sunny Side Up Bed and Breakfast in Cutchogue.
The renovated 1910 inn is brightened by both color and innkeeper Cheryl Meddles’ cheery demeanor. A registered nurse and professor at Stony Brook University, it wasn’t Meddles’ plan to run an inn when she purchased the former Top of the Morning Bed and Breakfast on Main Road in summer 2013. Initially she planned on opening an overnight medical spa called “Reboot Medical” that would provide aesthetic services such as Botox fillers.
While those services are still available by appointment, Meddles decided to follow in the previous owner’s footsteps and opened Sunny Side Up Bed and Breakfast in July.
“We are the newest, freshest of the fresh,” she said.
Sunny Side Up has three rooms all named after egg dishes — Eggs Florentine, Eggs Benedict and Over Easy.
All the rooms have en suite bathrooms, specialty soaps and linens, free Wi-Fi and queen sized beds. Just don’t expect a TV.
“I don’t think the rooms are for watching TV,” Meddles said. “That’s why we have common rooms.”
Hot and healthy breakfast at Sunny Side Up is served up fresh, farm to table.
“I love to make breakfast,” Meddles said. “I do sweet and savory.”
Menu items include biscuits with Canadian bacon, soufflé eggs with maple syrup. There is also yogurt and fresh fruit.
Meddles will also cater to dietary needs.
Located in the heart of the hamlet of Cutchogue, Sunny Side Up is within walking distance of several eateries and shops. A quick car ride (or bike ride) will take you to the area’s wineries and beaches. Or, take a five-minute walk to public transportation that will take you to other hamlets and New York City.
In the summer guests can enjoy the inn’s large deck and backyard area. The inn provides paddleboard and kayak rentals and has beach bags with sun lotion and towels for guests in the summer.
While you are there, you can also take advantage of Meddles’ medical know-how and relax with treatments in the inn’s spa room.
