Cabernet franc is increasingly regarded as one of the best varietals to grow here on the North Fork.

Bedell Cellars Winemaker Rich Olsen-Harbich has been proponent of the grape for years and his 2013 vintage of cabernet franc is our northforker ‘Wine of the Week.’

Now entering his fourth vintage at Bedell, Olsen-Harbich has made several acclaimed cab francs during his tenure, including a single vineyard bottling in 2012 that was praised by Wine for Dummies author Ed McCarty.  The 2010 vintage received 90 points from wine critic James Suckling and was featured in a Wall Street Journal article by Lettie Teague.

Olsen-Harbich believes that with the right clones, this noble grape variety produces stunning wines on Long Island. He uses older oak barrels and stainless steel to preserve its elegance and finesse and indigenous yeasts for all his fermentations.

Bedell Cellars Cabernet Franc 2013 is $40 in Bedell’s tasting room at 36225 Main Road Cutchogue.
