Gula Gula Empanadas, purveyor of the appetizing Latin American stuffed pastry and a favorite at the weekly Riverhead Farmers Market, will soon open its first storefront in Mattituck.

Owner Luchi Masliah recently signed a lease on a 1,400-square-foot space at 525 Pike Street where she hopes to offer prepared meals to go, a market and of course, her fresh empanadas, when the store opens sometime in March.

“We are very excited about coming to the North Fork,” Masliah said. “People are always asking us ‘where can we find you.’ We’re hoping to be an outlet for other producers who get the same question.”

Masliah said she plans to use North Fork sourced produce to make her products which include enticing varieties like local corn and onions and sweet potato and pear. Gula Gula Empanadas does not use artificial ingredients and uses only meats that were raised without antibiotics and added hormones.

“There are so many farms on the North Fork that are doing [hothouses] now,” she said. “Now that we are coming here we will have more options.”

Masliah, a native of Uruguay who lives in East Hampton Springs, started the company in 2012.
