Slurp to your heart’s content at Shelter Island Historical Society’s Oyster Event, which will feature an opening reception Saturday, Oct. 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Havens Barn on Route 114.

For $20 a person, you’ll enjoy fresh, local tastings by Little Creek Oyster Farm, demonstrations on oyster shucking and instructions on how to prepare Oysters Rockefeller.

Don’t like oysters? No problem! There will also be cheese, hors d’oeuvres and wine, plus live music by Lisa Shaw and Tom Hashagen.

In addition, attendees will be able to explore an exhibit about the Shelter Island Oyster Company featuring vintage photos and memorabilia including ads, maps, ties and an oyster-shucking machine.

Guests will also have the opportunity to learn about why oysters are vital to Long Island’s history from The Nature Conservancy’s Mashomack Preserve, which will present an exhibit on oyster biology and ecology.

Space is limited, so RSVP for the opening reception by Friday, Oct. 10, by calling the Shelter Island Historical Society at 631-749-0025.

Shelter Island Historical Society’s Oyster Event is sponsored by Long Island Community Foundation, Fast Frets-Slow Food, Lieb Cellars, Little Creek Oyster Farm, Little Peconic Purveyors, Shinn Estate Vineyards, Sparkling Pointe, Sylvestor Manor Educational Farms and James Wojcik.
