Refresh yourself with a big, juicy slice of fresh-picked watermelon or a ripe red tomato on the North Fork this weekend.
The Harbes Watermelon Festival will run Saturday Aug. 16 and Sunday, Aug. 17 at the Mattituck farm.
Kicking off Saturday around noon at Harbes Family Farm on Sound Avenue, festivities include watermelon-eating and seed-spitting contests, a watermelon roll competition, live music, local vendors, wine tastings and a variety of children’s activities. Admission is free.
That’s not the only festival taking place this weekend: Garden of Eve Organic Farm & Market on Sound Avenue in Riverhead will celebrate another red fruit Saturday and Sunday when they host TomatoFest.
From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days, guests can give their senses of taste and smell a workout by judging more than 20 varieties of tomatoes. Other activities include hayrides where attendees can pick their own tomatoes, tomato canning and make-your-own salsa classes and a tomato-growing workshop.
Admission: $3 per person; children under 6 free. To pre-register for a tomato canning class, click here. http://www.gardenofevefarm.com/TomatoFest.htm.
