August weekends in Riverhead aren’t just about days at the beach, wineries and farmstands. There’s one weekend each year here that’s all about heritage … and having fun.
The 40th annual Polish Town Fair and Polka Festival comes to Riverhead’s Polish Town this Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 16-17.
The event, which is sponsored by the Polish Town Civic Association, features a free street fair that takes place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days with art, crafts and jewelry.
And, of course, our favorite part is the specialty booths featuring Polish imports and authentic Polish food — including kielbasa, homemade pierogi, stuffed cabbage and babka.
The official 2014 Polish Town mug, souvenir cookbook and T-shirt will also be available for sale. Music will be provided by Mike Niemic’s Variety Band.
Among Saturday’s highlights are the re-enactment of an old-fashioned Polish wedding on the steps of St. Isidore R.C. Church, a flag-raising and Polish choir and Miss Polish Town 2014, Anna Sadowski.
Polonaise Park’s Polka Dance Festival runs from 2 to 10 p.m. featuring Eddie Forman and Dennis Polisky, Polka Country Musicians and the Maestro’s Men.
Admission is $18 for adults and $8 for children under 16.
Sunday’s events include Polish cooking demonstrations and other family entertainment, beginning at noon in the Polish Town pavilion.
We’ll see you there!
