The first moment Riverhead appears in the popular Netflix series ‘Orange is the New Black.’

Fans of the Netflix series “Orange is the New Black” don’t have to wait too long into the second season to get their first glimpse of Riverhead on the show.

The scene filmed outside the Suffolk Theater in January appears 17 minutes into the season’s first episode, directed by Academy Award winner Jodie Foster. The episode, titled “Thirsty Bird,” began streaming today.

The scene features a flashback to Piper, the show’s main character, during her grade school days. It’s cut day and she goes with friends to see the 1993 Richard Linklater film “Dazed and Confused” at a theater her mother later calls “The Suffolk.” [They really need to schedule a “Dazed and Confused” night at The Suffolk Theater now. I’m going dressed as Wooderson.]

While standing outside the theater, Piper spots her father walking out of a restaurant — the make believe Michael’s — with another woman in his arms. Also visible in the scene are signs for the Riverhead Farmers Market featuring eggs from Browder’s Birds.

At the 21:40 mark of the episode, the scenes filmed at the Suffolk County Jail in Riverside begin. The scenes are supposed to take place at a jail in Chicago, where Piper has been transferred following the fight scene in the season one finale. Casting agents had sought local extras for the jail scenes, which make up most of the rest of the first episode.

Although the scene outside the theater features no recognizable actors, the scenes filmed at the jail feature appearances from series star Taylor Schilling and guest stars Laura Prepon of “That ’70s Show” and Lori Petty from “A League of Their Own.”
