If your dream is to run a well-established local business in Greenport, the owners of White’s Hardware have a deal for you.

After nearly two decades in business, Stuart Kogelschatz and his estranged wife, Therese, are selling their Main Street store and all its products for $450,000.

The couple, which purchased the business from Bob White 24 years ago, has one request for potential buyers. They want the space to remain as a hardware store.

Mr. White’s father, Washington, established White’s Hardware in 1930 and it quickly became the go-to shop  for village residents. Bob White took over the store after serving in World War II. He owned the store for nearly 50 years before selling it to the Kogelschatzs.

Mr. Kogelschatz sold his hardware shop in Seacliff and move to the village to take over White’s store in 1990.

The Kogelschatzs said they are going through a divorce and believe now is the time to part ways and leave the shop to a new owner — one that will preserve its history.

“This store is my baby,” Mr. Kogelschatz said. “It is an institution in Greenport. I’ll miss it, but I think right now is the best time to get some new blood in here.”

Mr. White, who still owns the building where the Kogelschatz’s business is located, said he too wants to see it remain as a hardware store.

“There are no more substantial business in Greenport,” he said. “There are a lot of restaurants, of course, but there not a lot of small institutions like this.”

Mr.  Kogelschatz said he would do his best to keep White’s open until a new owner is found.
