It’s a region saturated with the juice of the grape, but light on the essence of the olive.

Enter the Pitted Olive, a new olive oil tasting room set to open in Jamesport sometime in June.

Jamesport transplant Linda Durgan will offer olive oil tastings, olive-themed gifts, drinkable vinegars and even an olive oil refill program when the Main Road storefront opens next month.

“I’m going to have olive oils from all over the world,” said Durgan, who will run the shop with help from her sons Keith, David and daughter-in-law Dana. “We just felt it was an up-and-coming idea.”

Vines & Branches in Greenport is currently the only other olive oil and vinegar shop on the North Fork.

Durgan plans to offer an olive oil refill program through Ariston, a Connecticut-based distributor of Greek olive oil. She also wants to offer decanters, olive-themed linens and Himalayan salt blocks, as well as local breads and produce for tastings.

At 68 years old, Durgan has an extensive retail background, though this will be her first business venture.

“I didn’t want to retire, move to a condo and have that be it,” she said. “I needed to have an adventure in the later part of my life.”

The Pitted Olive is located at 1560 Main Road in Jamesport, next to Grana wood-fired pizza.
