Local artist Terrence Joyce will donate a painting depicting Greenport Harbor to the East End Seaport Museum in Greenport over Memorial Day weekend.

A Greenport resident himself, Mr. Joyce will present “Blue Docks Greenport,” a 2010 58” x 17” acrylic on canvas, during an artist’s reception Saturday, May 24 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the museum. Cheese and wine will be served and the public is invited to attend.

Mr. Joyce said he’s donating “Blue Docks Greenport” in recognition of the town’s “many years of encouragement and support of my gallery and my art vision.”

A New York City native, Mr. Joyce opened the Terrence Joyce Gallery at 40 Caleb’s Way in Greenport in 2008. He learned how to apply frescoes while apprenticing with Italian monks in the early 1960s, he said, and helped them decorate the chapels, halls and library in the seminary where he studied. He began painting and exhibiting his work in SOHO and Greenwich Village in the late 1960s and ‘70s. On his website, Mr. Joyce said his “intent is to paint in the artistic flow begun in classical temple art and carried through in European art.”

His work often depicts North Fork landscapes and marine life.

On Saturday, May 24 and Sunday, May 25, many of Mr. Joyce’s mermaid and maritime works will be displayed at the East End Seaport Museum, located at the foot of Third Street in Greenport, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call the museum at 631-477-2100.
