Furry friends are getting in on a trendy diet that could lead to shinier coats, cleaner teeth and higher energy levels.

Known as the raw diet, the all-natural dog and cat food fad emphasizes the consumption raw meat, bones, fruits and vegetables — and it’s available at Groom + Gear on Love Lane in Mattituck.

Celebrating its grand opening this month, the pet store initially didn’t carry raw pet food, but started stocking the shelves as demand for the specialty food increased, said new owner Elissa Miles. Groom + Gear is now one of the few pet stores on the North Fork to offer raw pet food.

One of the major reasons the raw diet is beneficial is because it contains no grain — an ingredient difficult for pets to digest, Miles said.

“Most of the food dogs are eating can’t be processed,” Miles said. “Their bodies have no use for grain. Once somebody’s dog is on the diet they’ll see the difference. Less allergies, less vet visits, more energy.”

Surprise your pet tonight with a raw food dinner. Groom + Gear is located at 70 Love Lane in Mattituck.
