A sure sign summer has hit the North Fork is the start of Greenport Fire Department’s annual carnival.

Running Thursday, May 22, through Monday, May 26, the five-day event features games, rides and plenty of crave-worthy treats drawing hundreds of locals and visitors each year.

The festivities kick off Thursday, May 22 at the Polo Grounds on Moores Lane in Greenport and will run through Memorial Day, May 26.

A pay-one-price bracelet gives carnival goers one night of unlimited fun on favorites like the tilt-a-whirl and Ferris wheel. There are also rows upon rows of arcade games and plush prizes to be won.

A fireworks show is scheduled for 10 p.m. on Saturday, May 24. While the display can be viewed clearly from any area in the village, locals know to arrive early to score the best spot at the fair grounds.

The carnival is a fundraiser for the Greenport Fire Department’s Star Hose company. In the past, the proceeds have gone toward the creation of Larry Tuthill Park, located in the village near the Shelter Island Ferry terminal.
