Mattituck-Laurel Historical Society trustee Emily Tuthill Best Cramer was joined Saturday by her 6-year-old granddaughter Sofia Best and daughter Anya-Deane Tuthill Best to dedicate the museum’s new Tuthill Library.

The library contains books, diaries, photos and other items that once belonged to members of the Tuthill family.

Some items date back to before 1799, when the original portion of the house was built by Jesse Tuthill. (His son Ira expanded the original house in 1852.)

Ms. Best Cramer, a direct descendent of Jesse and Ira Tuthill, donated the materials, which had been stored by the family for decades in a Delaware attic. She said her favorite items include letters between Ira Tuthill and the captain of a boat Mr. Tuthill ran daily to New York City.

There are also letters about the Civil War. Click here to visit the Mattituck-Laurel Historical Society online.
