Dianne Scott of Riverhead at the 2012 Horseradish Party at Martha Clara.

A Horseradish Festival, inspired by a popular annual party in Riverhead, is coming to the North Fork next month.

Event organizer Nora Donnelly of Starfish Junction Production said the Horseradish Party, which had been held for more than four decades, had grown too much to continue in its previous capacity. The annual event become so popular it was moved to a barn at Martha Clara six years ago.

Now it’s growing again.

“We wanted to get Long Island on the map as far as horseradish goes and get the community involved,” Ms. Donnelly said. “It was a little bloom of something that we decided to take on and make a big event.”

The day promises to be a celebration of all things horseradish with demonstrations, shopping and a highly anticipated “Bloody Mary” contest.

In addition to the contests, there will be will be an egg hunt, potato sack race and a ‘build your own Mr. Potato Head’ workshop for kids. For adults there will be live music, food and drinks.

The North Fork Horseradish Festival is set for Saturday, April 12 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Hallockville Museum Farm in Riverhead (map it)

Admission is $20. Children under 12 get in for free. The price includes access to the festival, free programming, activities and contests.
