One of the North Fork’s most recognizable houses is off the market.

The 37-acre, 14,000 square-foot estate at 55 Cox Neck Road in Mattituck has been known for its scope, incomparable amenities and sizable price tag since it hit the market in 2011.

Originally listed at $8.9 million, the property closed for $4 million during a snowstorm Jan. 21. While that’s far off the opening asking price for the estate — the former home of late Long Island Aquarium owner Jim Bissett — it’s a particularly noteworthy transfer for the North Fork.

Broker Sheri Winter Clarry of The Corcoran Group said the property’s worth every penny.

“Behind wrought iron gates an oasis awaits,” Ms. Clarry said. “It’s 14,000 square feet of perfect entertaining and living space with endless planted grounds.”

Built in 2008, the seven bedroom, five bathroom home features an indoor/outdoor pool, motocross track, working horse farm and specimen plantings, Ms. Clarry said.

“The property was never just about the house, it’s about the feel of all those beautifully planted lush grounds,” she added.

Rumors about who might purchase the property — including one yarn about actor Johnny Depp being in contract — have circulated around town since it first went on the market. Ms. Clarry put those rumors to rest some months back, and she declined to comment on the buyer this week.

“Let’s keep the mystery alive,” she said.
