Maria’s Kitchen isn’t just a hidden gem because it’s on Shelter Island. It’s a hidden gem, because you’ll probably have a hard time finding it once you get to the Island.
Located at the old Greeny’s Natural Food Market location on Ferry Road near the center of town, Maria’s serves up fresh Mexican specialties and, in true small-town fashion, many other menu choices. You can even grab grocery items while there.
I’d recommend you stick to what the very personable Maria does best — burritos, tacos or enchiladas — since it’s not just anywhere you can get Mexican food on Shelter Island. Don’t forget to ask for a side of her fresh green salsa, too.
The key to finding Maria’s, which opened two years ago, is to know it’s located behind an insurance agency. Be sure to keep an eye out for the yellow Maria’s Kitchen sign as you approach the circle near the American Legion Hall.
