What could be more motivating for the person looking to get fit than having your spouse cheering and sweating along side you?

With Valentines Day around the corner, and February marking American Heart Month, 14 couples attended the first couples spin class at the JABS studio in Cutchogue Wednesday evening.

“What’s unique about this class is that the spouses of the people who signed up had never taken spin (or have rarely taken spin) and were encouraged by their partners to do this,” said JABS owner Jill Schroeder.

Even the instructor, Roland Walker, brought along his wife, Devora, who rode next to him at the front of the class.

“It was something that a couple of the women who come here had been thinking of putting together,” Schroeder said. “They had been trying to get their husbands and spouses to come with them.”

Being that it was only couples, spouses felt more open and comfortable taking a spin at it, she said.

With the lights dimmed and the music up, Walker guided the newbies and the vets through the class, catering to the strengths of each rider by using different exercise variations.

Schroeder said they would be fielding reactions from the class to see if it is something they will offer more often — which seems like a good idea to us.
