Made on-site and bursting with homemade ingredients, the lemon meringue pie is a longstanding customer favorite at Modern Snack Bar in Aquebogue.

“People just love it,” restaurant co-owner Otto Wittmeier said.

Evidently, so do the pros: this year, the iconic diner’s lemon meringue pie made the number one spot in Saveur Magazine’s ‘Top 100’ list of recipes for 2013. To see the article, click here.

Mr. Wittmeier said his 91-year-old mother, restaurant co-owner Wanda Wittmeier, came up with the original recipe for the pie, an inspired version of which is available on Saveur’s website.

This isn’t the first time the Modern Snack Bar has earned praise from distinguished publications. Last June, the iconic Main Road restaurant was named one of ‘America’s Best Diners’ by Travel + Leisure Magazine.

“It’s kind of nice,” Mr. Wittmeier said of the accolade. “It brings people in.”
