Noah’s restaurant in Greenport is serving a special cocktail through the month of October to raise money for ALS research.

A joint collaboration between Noah’s and the relatives of an East Marion man who was diagnosed with the disease three years ago, “The Cure” is a $12 cocktail made with Meyer lemon vodka, negroni, aperol and vermouth. One hundred percent of proceeds from each sale of the drink will be donated to the ALS Association, a spokesperson for Noah’s said.

The restaurant was approached about doing the fundraiser by Colleen Ruggiero, a senior public relations coordinator in NYC who is running the New York City Marathon Nov. 3 with her sister and sister-in-law. Ms. Ruggiero’s brother-in-law’s father, who has a home in East Marion, was diagnosed with the disease three years ago.

“We felt that a fundraiser on the North Fork would be perfect,” Ms. Ruggierio said. “It was a joint collaboration between us runners and Noah. He and his team have been super supportive and it’s been great working on this together.”

ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a rapidly progressing, incurable and fatal neuromuscular disease characterized by progressive muscle weakness that results in paralysis, according to the Stony Brook University School of Medicine website. As the phrenic nerve to the diaphragm muscles fails, patients lose the ability to breathe without ventilator support.

“I was inspired by this team of people who have all trained so hard for the race itself and is working to raise money to help fund ALS research,” said Noah Schwartz, the owner of Noah’s. “Their dedication is commendable and I’m happy that the restaurant was able to get involved and support this worthy cause.”

A second ALS fundraiser will take place on the North Fork this month. On Oct. 13, local chefs and artisans will come together for “A Love Shared,” an event at 8 Hands Farm in Cutchogue that will raise money for Gerry Hayden, the longtime executive chef and co-owner of Southold’s North Fork Table & Inn, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2011.
