A Jamesport woman’s recipe for a no-bake, gluten-free Key lime pie recently took top honors in an Oct. 24 episode of “The Dr. Oz Show” on CBS.

Mary McGuire-Wien, a raw food and raw juice coach, said she and a few other people in her field were recently asked by producers of the popular daytime talk show to submit a low-sugar recipe. Ms. McGuire-Wien is the author of the 2009 book “The Seven-Day Total Cleanse: A Revolutionary New Juice Fast and Yoga Plan to Purify Your Body and Clarify the Mind.”

“They asked a few of us to make a low-sugar recipe because Dr. Oz was having a show about how much sugar people consume and how they can get a sugar fix without overdoing it,” she said.

Ms. McGuire-Wien provided them with her recipe for a Key lime pie that is served frozen and sweetened with local raw honey and lucuma, a tropical fruit that has what Ms. McGuire-Wien describes as “high antioxidants and a lovely, mild sweetness.” It can be purchased at health food stores and is used in powder form for the pie, she said.

After comparing each submitted recipe on his Oct. 24 show, Ms. McGuire-Wien said, Dr. Oz chose her Key lime pie as the winner.

“I’ve been making [the pie] for a while, but not with the lucuma – that’s something new I discovered and added to it,” she said. “I’m a very flexible cook so I’m always bending according to season, availability and what I have on hand.”

Ms. McGuire-Wien, who is the author of “The Seven-Day Total Cleanse,” has been on a raw food-only diet with her partner, Charles Wildbank, for the past three months.

“We feel terrific,” she said. “With the holidays coming up it’s nice that a dessert can actually be nutritious and you don’t have to feel bad about eating it.”
